They took in an “unwanted” cat and not only uplifted her life but also brought hope to four kittens.
A few weeks ago, a local veterinary clinic contacted Nikki and her team at Best Friends Felines about a cat that had been brought in as a stray.
The cat was friendly and likely had lived with people before. Despite searching and waiting, no one came forward to claim her. Her spirit began to fade the longer she stayed in the kennel.
The staff urgently sought to place her in a foster home. “This young lady needed an immediate home as she was very pregnant,” Best Friends Felines shared.
With some careful coordination, they arranged a foster home just in time for her to have her kittens. “She settled in albeit a little cautious of her surroundings; after all, it was a big week.”
After accepting a few belly rubs, she relaxed and quickly turned into a purring machine.
A few days later, she was at the vet for a check-up. Shortly after, she surprised everyone when the moment arrived – it was go-time.
“Between getting home and checking on her several hours later, she had already given birth to three healthy-looking babies. A very short time later, her fourth and final baby was born.”
“We believe this was not her first litter (but will be her last), as everyone and everything was spotless the next morning.”
Callooh (the mom cat) was very attentive unless a belly rub was in the cards. With a quiet, comfortable home, she truly blossomed and grew fond of her foster family.
“She will often meet us at the door of the kitten room. She has also discovered her inner kitten and is pouncing around the room, playing with the toys we have in there.”
The kittens (Brillig, Wocky, Wabe, and Jubjub – all from the poem Jabberwocky) doubled in size within the first week and continued to hit all their milestones in the weeks that followed. “All have eyes wide open and are starting to wriggle around.”
“Wocky (white) is one of the loudest kittens I have come across. He loves being snug and cozy, so moving him away to weigh him nightly or give him a little snuggle usually results in squealing. Wabe, the other white kitten, is the complete opposite. He is very chilled out and loves a slow lifestyle.”
Over the past two weeks, Wocky has become extra fluffy and has earned the nickname “Falkor” from The NeverEnding Story due to his soft, white, wispy hair.
As the kittens ventured outside their nest and became more playful and mischievous, Callooh savored the peaceful, kitten-free moments with her humans. She still greeted them at the door, promptly reminding them if breakfast was served late.
As soon as the kittens swarmed her, she plopped down and catered to their every whim.
Once they moved into a larger playpen, the kittens’ energy and playfulness intensified. “Jubjub (the ginger and white) charges around his pen like a man on a mission.”
Brillig, the tortie, may be the smallest of the bunch, but she holds her own when wrestling with her brothers. “She is more on the stumpy side. But it just makes her adorable, and we want to snuggle her more.”
While the kittens wrestle and tumble with one another, their mom enjoys a few rare moments of calm – until her kittens leap out from the cat furniture onto her belly like a whirlwind.
Wocky continues to lead the pack in weight, with the others not far behind.
“Callooh has been spending more and more time away from them. She is also interested in the furry visitors that peer in through the tall baby gate.”
The family of five welcomes every human with purrs and leg rubs. “It seems only yesterday that these babies entered the world.” Soon, they will be embarking on their next exciting adventure.
