North Carolina Cat Defies Odds to Survive Hurricane Helene

A North Carolina family reunited with their cat, Blanco, eight days after Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding in the area. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell (MSPCA-Angell) shared the story about this “resilient little cat.”

The family, who made it to dry land but couldn’t save Blanco, presumed they had lost him forever. However, in an “incredible and unexpected” turn of events, the cat found his way back home after the hurricane had passed. He then received immediate treatment at the organization’s mobile clinic.

North Carolina cat survives fall from power lines during hurricane floods

Blanco, the North Carolina cat whose miraculous return eight days after Hurricane Helene, has made news headlines. MSPCA-Angell shared Blanco’s survival journey and heartwarming story on Facebook. The organization wrote in a post that the “handsome cat” separated from his family when Hurricane Helene struck Yancey County where they lived. The storm caused heavy flooding in the area, similar to many other regions.

The North Carolina family barely made it to dry land but couldn’t rescue their cat from the hurricane. They hopelessly watched while Blanco clung to power lines, attempting to escape from the raging floods. However, he ultimately fell into the waters below, which swept him away. The feline’s family believed they had forever lost Blanco during the incident.

Surprisingly, the cat had not only survived the severe North Carolina floods but eight days after the hurricane, he even returned to his family. In their release, MSPCA-Angell rejoiced, “Blanco found his way back home” and that “his family was overcome with relief” after his safe return. They then brought him to the organization’s mobile clinic, for which their team was “SO grateful.” There, the hurricane survivor received treatment for an ear infection and upper respiratory issues.

MSPCA-Angell announced that Blanco, who was one of the many animals the organization aided during their time in North Carolina, “embodies hope and perseverance” as a cat.
