Songs We Sing to Baby Cat: Benefits of Living Amongst the Melodies

I Got You, Babe-y Cat.
I Got You, Babe-y Cat.

Hi, I’m Nicole! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my distinguished Burmese, Mr. Baby Cat.

It all started with an innocent tune. As a big fan of Justin Bieber (yes, I’m a Belieber), there was a song I could not avoid singing from the moment we christened Baby Cat with his name. You know it. It’ll be stuck in your head for days if I make you sing it.

We’re quite a musical family, so we tend to sing everything (think Marshall from HIMYM). Whether it’s creating a new tune and lyrics, taking an existing tune and rewriting the lyrics, or simply repurposing a song in its true form, there’s always a melody flowing.

A little serenading can make even the laziest feline moment feel like Broadway. Somehow, Baby inspires a new song for every situation.

I thought I’d put together a little list of some of our favorite songs to sing to Baby Cat and maybe inspire you to do the same for your kitty. Having them easily accessible is especially helpful if you need to leave them with a babysitter and want them to provide a familiar comforting experience. There are so many more songs we sing him, but the following 6 are the most commonly heard around our home.

6 of Our Favorite Songs to Sing to Baby Cat

1. Baby by Justin Bieber ft. Ludacris

It’s no surprise that this song is top of the list. It’s impossible to avoid singing this when I say Baby’s name.

2. Muffin Top by Jenna Maroney of 30 Rock

This one is not sung in its original form. We have a Baby Cat original song that starts “He’s a little Baby Cat, running around, how ‘bout that,’” which is when we bring in Muffin top – ”I know you want a piece of that, but I’m just here to dance.” It’s weird. But he gets a good kick out of it, I’m sure.

3. Always Be My Baby – Mariah Carey

This song is usually brought out when I’m trying to cuddle the little muffin man and he’s not into it. “Boy, did you know you can’t escape me, ooh darling ‘cause you’ll always be my baby!” He loves it.

4. Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-A-Lot

He’s got the cutest little fluffy butt, so it’s hard to ignore it when he waddles it my way.

5. Baby Love – The Supremes

This one is good for when my husband has grown tired of Bieber’s Baby, but it still has a very similar effect.

6. I Got You Babe – Sonny and Cher

This one is reserved for special moments when we’re having some ‘us’ snuggle time and he’s got his purr on. Even without me needing to sing it, he knows ‘I got him.’

Are There Benefits to Singing to Your Cat?

While not a ton of research has been done on the impacts of singing to your cat, if you’ve partaken in this pastime, it’s hard to ignore the benefits.

Bonding: Singing definitely helped strengthen the bond between Baby Cat, my husband, and me. He responds to our singing voices, and it seems like he feels a sense of security and connection when we sing. I know I feel it.

Stress Reduction: For both cats and humans, singing can be a soothing activity. For me, when I am frustrated with something he’s done, (e.g., pee on the floor), I can start singing to him and asking him questions to a melody. While it’s impossible to know how he feels, I know that my stress levels drop immediately.

Personal Enjoyment: Let’s not forget that singing to pets can be fun and boost your own mood! Playfully engaging with Baby Cat brings joy to my day and creates shared moments of silliness.

Boy did you know you can't escape me? Ooh darling 'cause you'll always be my Baby.

Do You Sing to Your Cat?

It’s easy for us to repurpose so many songs because the word Baby is in almost every song, even if it isn’t in the title. We also love to create our own songs and sing them to him.

Am I the crazy one here? I’d love to hear from you – do you sing to your cat? Any fun ones you want to share?
