Charged EVs | Hofer Powertrain and ETH Zurich launch GaN multilevel inverter growth challenge

Germany-headquartered EV powertrain producer Hofer Powertrain has began a analysis challenge in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Expertise in Zurich (ETH Zurich) to develop a three-level gallium nitride (GaN) traction inverter that makes use of adaptive gate drivers and allows decrease switching losses.

The challenge is supported by funding from Innosuisse, the Swiss Company of Innovation Promotion.

The collaboration with ETH Zurich builds on Hofer Powertrain’s progress during the last 4 years in growing superior multilevel energy electronics utilizing GaN chip know-how that has resulted in 800 V GaN inverters with larger effectivity and energy density in comparison with silicon-based programs.

The brand new challenge goals to provide an inverter that employs a novel modulation scheme, operates at very excessive switching frequencies, and incorporates extra options that the corporate has been growing.

The challenge will likely be supervised by Professor Johann Biela from ETH Zurich and Dr. Lukasz Roslaniec, Division Lead of Energy Electronics at Hofer Powertrain, who commented: “We’re assured that our partnership will yield options that aren’t solely technologically superior but in addition financially accessible, thereby pushing the adoption of electrical automobiles and environmental sustainability.”
