The UAW union’s Stellantis Council met yesterday to debate the beleaguered carmaker’s “ongoing failure” to honor the settlement that ended the 2023 labor strike, and their newest union memo doesn’t pull many punches.
It’s not a good time to be Stellantis. Its sellers are suing management and threatening to oust the corporate’s controversial CEO, Carlos Tavares, as gross sales proceed to crater in North America, it will probably’t transfer its new, high-profile electrical Fiat, and it’s first luxurious electrical Jeep isn’t prepared. And now, issues are about to get unhealthy.
In an electronic mail despatched out by the UAW earlier at this time (acquired at 4:55PM CST), UAW President Shawn Fain wrote, “For years, the corporate picked us off plant-by-plant and we lacked the desire and the means to combat again. As a result of we stood collectively and demanded the proper to strike over job safety—product dedication—we’ve got the instruments to combat again and win … We unanimously suggest to the membership that each UAW employee at Stellantis put together for a combat, and all of us get able to vote YES to authorize a strike at Stellantis.”
The dispute appears to stem from Stellantis’ lack of ability to decide to new product (and continued employment) at its UAW-run vegetation and different failings to fulfill its strike-ending obligations. This, regardless of a €3 billion inventory buyback executed in late 2023.
